Shin Splints

Shin splints cause aching or sharp pain along the front or inner edge of the lower leg, often when you start or increase running, jumping, or walking.

If your shins ache at the start of every run or after a long day on your feet, shin splints may be the reason.

About shin splints

Shin splints, often called medial tibial stress syndrome, are irritation of the muscles and tissues along the shinbone. They are common in runners, dancers, and people who recently stepped up their activity.

Common symptoms

  • Aching or sharp pain along the shinbone
  • Tenderness when pressing along the shin
  • Pain that starts with exercise and may ease with rest
  • Mild swelling in the lower leg

Common causes

  • A quick jump in training volume or intensity
  • Hard surfaces or worn-out shoes
  • Flat feet or tight calf muscles
  • Repetitive impact

How High-Pressure Cryotherapy (HPC) may help

High-Pressure Cryotherapy (HPC) uses high-pressure carbon dioxide (CO₂) to rapidly cool the skin over a specific treatment area. For shin splints, the treatment area is the sore part of the shin. HPC may help with pain and inflammation in that area. The recommended regimen is usually 4 to 5 sessions, then we reassess together. Many patients report relief after one or two visits, although individual responses may vary. HPC does not replace rest or a proper evaluation if a stress fracture is possible. It treats the sore area, and for many people it may help manage shin pain and inflammation.

Every treatment begins with a free consultation. Typical treatment takes about 3–6 minutes per area. HPC is not a substitute for medical care and does not replace a diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know it is shin splints and not a stress fracture?
