IT Band Pain
IT band pain shows up along the outside of the thigh or at the outer knee, and is common in runners, cyclists, and people who are on their feet a lot.

Many people feel it a mile or two into a run, and it can settle down when they stop.
About it band pain
The iliotibial (IT) band is a thick strip of tissue that runs along the outside of the thigh from the hip to just below the knee. Irritation where it moves over the outer knee or hip is a common source of pain.
Common symptoms
- Aching or sharp pain on the outside of the knee or thigh
- Tightness along the outer thigh
- Pain that builds during running or cycling
- Tenderness on the outside of the hip
Common causes
- Repetitive running or cycling
- Sudden increases in distance or hills
- Weak hip muscles or tight surrounding muscles
- Running on uneven surfaces
How High-Pressure Cryotherapy (HPC) may help
High-Pressure Cryotherapy (HPC) uses high-pressure carbon dioxide (CO₂) to rapidly cool the skin over a specific treatment area. For IT band pain, the treatment area is the sore part along the outside of the thigh, hip, or knee. HPC may help with pain and inflammation in that area. The recommended regimen is usually 4 to 5 sessions, then we reassess together. Many patients report relief after one or two visits, although individual responses may vary. HPC does not change why the IT band is irritated. It treats the sore area, and for many people it may help manage pain and inflammation along the outer thigh and knee.
Every treatment begins with a free consultation. Typical treatment takes about 3–6 minutes per area. HPC is not a substitute for medical care and does not replace a diagnosis.
